Relevance of animal welfare to meat quality

Laura Laura Boyle TeagascBoyle M.Agr.Sc., Ph.D., is a senior research officer at Teagasc Moorepark with +20 years of experience in animal welfare science. Her research interests are broadly focused on management, housing and transport effects on the health and welfare of dairy cows and pigs with particular focus on lameness.

Laura sits on the national Scientific Advisory Committee on Animal Health and Welfare and is involved in several committees at European level. She has supervised 16 PhD and Masters students and has almost 70 peer reviewed scientific publications and 160 presentations at national and international congresses.

As a requirement of Laura’s primary degree in agricultural science she spent several summers working at Lough Farm in Dingle in the early 90’s where she gained invaluable knowledge on the husbandry of cows, cattle and a variety of sheep breeds. Her continued association with the town is a legacy of this experience

Feirm to forc project

Studentsfeirm to forc project buying calves have taken farming to the classroom and a re rearing ccattle as part of the their school work. The students involved are Darragh Ó Murchadha, Maurice Ó Céilleachair, Louis Murchan, Sean Ó Brosnacháin, Gavin MacCarthaigh, Dara May agus Darragh Ó Dubháin

The project which is a co-operation between the farming community, chefs and the school is part of a larger project aimed to increase the amount of local beef and lamb being served in food outlets on the peninsula.


Beekeeping on farms

Tadhg Leahy is the Chairperson of the local branch of the Irish Beekeepers Association.



Opportunities provided by Hemp as a Crop

Steve AllinSteve Allin will discuss the potential provided by Hemp as a crop in West Kerry. Steve Allin has enthusiastically pioneered the use of hemp in building in Ireland and internationally since 1997 & is the author of the pre-eminent book "Building with Hemp" (2006) 2nd Edition, 2012.




There will be plenty of time for questions, All are welcome, light refreshments will be available.
